The Paul Tillich Lecture:
"Encountering the 'Other' in a World of Difference and Danger"
The Paul Tillich Lecture for 2005-06 will be delivered by Letty M. Russell, Professor of Theology, Emerita, Yale Divinity School. Her lecture will consider how, in a world of conflict and terror, fear of the "other" leads to reaction, exclusion, and absolutism; and how people of faith are called to affirm difference as a gift of God through creating forms of justice that promote the practice of hospitality in personal life and in society. Russell, a member of the first class of women to be admitted to Harvard Divinity School (in 1955), received her ThD from Yale. She is widely published, internationally distinguished, and was recently cited as "one of Yale's premier scholars" whose "influence on the churches, the international women's movements and theological education is unparalleled in the last half of the 20th century." Her lecture is co-sponsored by Harvard Divinity School and the Memorial Church. The Memorial Church, Harvard Yard.
