Dean's Welcome
Welcome
to this website, which is designed to provide an accurate,
accessible, and timely portrait of Harvard Divinity School.
We are proud to trace our origins and mission back to the
early days of American history. But we believe that it is just
as crucial at this time to show how HDS—a nonsectarian school of theology and
religious studies, based within a major research university—is serving a global
future.
I hope that as you explore these electronic pages, you will
quickly detect our commitment to produce scholars and leaders, across the
academic fields and the professions, who are rigorously educated with a particular eye to the
broad range
of the world's religious traditions. I hope you are struck, as well, by our
concern with helping students reflect on, and practically confront, the many
issues raised by religion in both history and contemporary life.
Finally, I hope that you will recognize the HDS community as
an inclusive, outward-turning community, within which intellectual ideals and
the ideals of social awareness and participation naturally inform one another.
