Women, Religion, and the 'Turn to Agency'
This course explores different understandings of agency that circulate within the social scientific study of women and religion. It examines various instances of the nexus of religion, agency and women and how it is configured in classic social scientific accounts, including texts that are central within the secularization paradigm, and unpacks these configurations and the ways in which they rely on, and affirm, particular understandings of gender (e.g. women's disposition to superstition and fanaticism, as well as submission). the work of Saba Mahmood (2001; 2005) will be central in tracing the epistemological and methodological assumptions that inform such conceptions of pious women's agency.
