Description

This course will examine perceptions of history and practices of writing history in early Christian times. The focus will be on Eusebius of Caesarea, who in his Ecclesiastical History described the development of the church from the apostolic age to his own time. This enormous work of compilation, synthesis, and reconstruction became a model for many later ecclesiastical histories. In his work On the Martyrs of Palestine Eusebius reported on the persecutions between 303 and 310, of which he was an eyewitness. His panegyric Life of Constantine contains many authentic documents, such as a speech of the emperor. The course strengthens Greek reading ability, while surveying questions of historiography. Prerequisite: 4221 or the equivalent. Note: Course has additional hour to be arranged.
