Description

This course will explore the lives and works of the Protestant theologians and ethicists Reinhold Niebuhr (1892-1971) and H. Richard Niebuhr (1894-1962). Throughout their long careers, the Niebuhr brothers carried on a remarkable intellectual dialogue in both their private correspondence and their unpublished and published writings. As we survey the similarities and differences between the brothers and their intellectual projects, we will also consider various interlocutors who influenced their thought, including Max Weber, Ernst Troeltsch, William James, Karl Barth, Paul Tillich, Emil Brunner, John Dewey, Horace Kallen, and Will Herberg.
