Alternative Spiritualities in the United States

Description
This course surveys spiritual practices and movements that have been labeled as "metaphysical," "esoteric," "occult," "harmonial" or "New Age." Beginning with colonial practices of astrology, alchemy, and spirit possession, we will consider Swedenborgianism, Spiritualism, Theosophy, New Thought, and their myriad descendents in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. The course will also feature field trips to two or three spiritual organizations or communities.
