HDS 2607

Wonder and Glory

Mayra Rivera Rivera

Description

"Philosophy begins in wonder." This assertion, attributed to Socrates, has inspired Western philosophers for centuries. But wonder has also been regarded with deep suspicion by those who seek certainty in knowledge. Wonder has also been contested for ethical reasons. How can we can we celebrate wonder when even a cursory look at history reveals that systems of injustices expose the lives of some people to indescribable suffering? This course will focus on philosophical debates about wonder and their implications for critical theological studies. Readings will include works by Jean Luc Nancy, Enrique Dussel, Giorgio Agamben, and others.
