The Shock of the Old: Conference Course
Michael D. Jackson and Kimberley C. Patton
This course is about the impact of the past on the "present" of historical time. Through the disciplinary lenses of anthropology and archaeology, we will explore how different peoples have encountered, imagined and appropriated earlier times-historical, prehistorical, mythical, ancestral, biographical, material and ideological. Key concepts include social time, memory, firstness, human temporality, the status of the dead, and eternal recurrence. We will also consider different conceptions and practices of transformation and rebirth, the nature of our thralldom to the past and our freedom to transcend it, and the modern West's relationship to the heritage of the classical world. Note: Limited to 30 students, by application at the first class meeting.
Enrollment Limited: Limited to 30 students. Instructor's permission required.
