Buddhist Women and Representations of the Female

Description
This course explores the place of women in monastic discipline, in lay life, and in tantric sexual traditions along with the accompanying gender conceptions. Our sources include both Buddhist and contemporary Western and Asian gender theory, Buddhist narrative, and autobiographies by Buddhist women. The course takes up feminist criticism of Buddhism, historical Buddhist efforts to promote gender equality, and contemporary debates on whether feminist criticism is a modern or western imposition. No previous study of Buddhism required. Note: course has additional section hour to be arranged.
