Wide-ranging introduction to the Islamic intellectual tradition through primary source readings from the debate over the Satanic verses incident conducted in the discourses of sirah-maghazi, tafsir, Hadith, 'ilm al-kalam, usul al-fiqh, Sufism, inter-sectarian polemic, inter-religious polemic, etc, from the 7th century to today. Note: May only be taken for a letter grade. Not open to auditors. Prerequisite: Advanced Reading Proficiency in Arabic.
