The Bhagavad Gita and Its Commentators

Francis X. Clooney, SJ

The Bhagavad Gita, a Hindu classic of devotion and theology, has received extensive classical and contemporary commentary. The seminar explores selectively the interpretations of classical commentators with a specific focus on Madhusudana Sarasvati, and for contrast, some 20th century interpreters Hindu and Christian. Meant for students interested in closely reading Indian/Hindu texts, with awareness of textual analogues in other religions. No Sanskrit required, but may be useful for optional reading.
