Description

This course engages interreligious and intercultural perspectives on "The Last Things" or, Eschatology. Readings engage biblical and patristic eschatology, eschatology in world religions, global, feminist, philosophical and cultural issues in eschatology. In particular, we will examine why the 20th century has been called "the century of eschatology." We will also examine Christian theological notions of eschatology together with cultural materials such as Hal Lindsey's The late Great Planet Earth and the Left Behind series. Further, interreligious perspectives on eschatology underscore the idea that the broad definition of eschatology operating in the West only applies to theistic religions that hold on to a linear view of time and history. What practical theological implications follow for communities of faith grappling with multiple narratives of "The End Times" is the question we will explore.
