The mission of FriendshipWorks is to reduce social isolation, enhance the quality of life, and preserve the dignity of older adults in greater Boston. To do this, we recruit and train volunteers of all faiths who provide friendship, advocacy, education, assistance and emotional support: we make long-term friendship matches to offer companionship, and offer short-term assistance through medical escorts and non-medical help (for example, organizing papers or shopping). We also develop and implement community educational projects. FriendshipWorks provides these services for English and Spanish speaking elders. We are a founding member of the Faith in Action National Network. Since our inception, FriendshipWorks has served over 20,000 Boston area elders and adults with disabilities.
Opportunities for Student Involvement:
Students will have direct service experience by doing medical escorts and one-time assistance for elders. Student may also help with programs through volunteer recruitment, site visits to elders' homes, and introduction of volunteers to elders and adults with disabilities. They may also participate in agency program planning/development or conduct congregational outreach. Duties might include a leadership role in building FriendshipWorks' new Interfaith Conversations gatherings, which bring together lay leaders from various congregations to discuss issues of elderly congregants. Students may also choose to work in community development, marketing and public relations.
FriendshipWorks' main office is at 105 Chauncy St. near Downtown Crossing. It is easily accessible by the Red, Orange, Green or Silver Lines.
