The Fenway Community Health Center (FCHC) is widely known for its expertise in gay and lesbian health concerns. The Violence Recovery Program (VRP) provides counseling and advocacy to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) victims of hate crimes, domestic violence, sexual assault and police misconduct. The VRP also provides community education and training to criminal justice professionals and human service providers.
Opportunities for Student Involvement:
The intern will provide counseling and advocacy to victims of violence, working closely with staff advocates on specific cases. Daily activities will include telephone contact with clients, agents of the legal system and other agencies to help clients receive appropriate responses from service providers. Face-to-face counseling and accompaniment to police stations or court are periodically required. Other projects may be negotiated. Past projects have included outreach to women, religious leaders or people of color; development of new education materials or resource manuals; organizing self-defense courses, rallies or vigils; and researching trends in incidents of police misconduct. There is also an opportunity to take part in agency forums and trainings addressing GLBT aspects of issues such as trauma, HIV, substance abuse and parenting.

Supervision:
The intern will meet weekly with the Senior Advocate for administrative and clinical supervision and theological reflection, as well as attending weekly group supervision with the Program Coordinator and other interns. 12-15 hours a week.
