Organization Description:

First Parish Church of Groton is a vibrant, active congregation of about 230 adults and 100 children and youth, located in the center of Groton, MA. Groton is 50 miles northwest of Boston. The minister and church leaders have both a yearning and feel a sense of responsibility to become a teaching congregation. We believe we can offer a student minister a supportive, thoughtful, and responsive environment in which to learn. Our congregation also offers institutional health, a long-term settled minister and strong lay leadership. First Parish Church of Groton is a Welcoming Congregation. We offer opportunities to minister to children, youth and elders, to people of differing theological views, to straight and gay people, and to people of increasingly diverse socio-economic backgrounds.

Opportunities for Student Involvement:

The specific expectations for the field education experience will be developed with the student, based on her or his learning goals and areas of needed development. Some of the areas where student involvement would be welcome include: assisting with and leading worship and special services such as holiday services and worship for all ages; sermon writing and preaching; pastoral care and visiting; working in religious education with children and youth as a classroom teacher, youth discussion group leader or leading special youth programs, involvement with outreach ministries of the church, such as Groton Community Dinners, Refugee outreach ministry, Prison ministry or Mental Health outreach ministry. There is room for the student minister to coach in our adult spirituality small group ministry program and/or to develop small groups or lead workshops or classes in his or her particular areas of interest. We are also open to ideas we have not yet thought of. We expect the student to be regularly engaged in Sunday worship with primary responsibility for the service and sermon several times a year.
