Programs of Study
Harvard Divinity School offers four degree programs:
-
The master of divinity (MDiv): A three-year program primarily for those preparing for ministry.
-
The master of theological
studies (MTS): A two-year program for those beginning careers as scholars and educators in religion, or combining religion with other fields such as journalism, law, or medicine.

-
The doctor of theology (ThD): A doctoral program for those planning to teach in college, seminary, or university settings, or
to assume administrative or research positions in denominational or social organizations.
-
The master of theology (ThM): A one-year program for students who have received the
master of divinity degree or its equivalent (three years of graduate theological study) and
who wish to pursue advanced theological studies for one year.
MDiv and MTS students may also earn licensure as middle or secondary school
teachers through the Program in Religion and Secondary Education
(PRSE). Students apply to the PRSE separately, after they have been accepted into the master of divinity or master of theological studies degree program.
HDS also offers several nondegree programs, as well as two
summer programs, the Summer Leadership Institute
and the Summer Language Program.
Please note
that questions about part-time study and dual degree programs should be directed to the
Registrar's Office.
