Dean's Distinguished Service Award: William J. Rainer
The Dean's Distinguished Service Award recognizes exemplary service to and support of Harvard Divinity School. Recipients have a deep understanding of HDS and its mission, and they serve as visible advocates for the School, helping to strategically advance HDS and the Dean's priorities. William J. Rainer is chairman of two companies managed by his sons: New Braunfels Communications, Inc., a radio station, and Shortridge Academy, a preparatory boarding school for struggling teenagers in New Hampshire. Rainer served as chairman of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) from 1999 through early 2001. He is also founder and former managing director of Greenwich Capital Markets, Inc., now a part of RBS. In the 1990s, he spent four years as chairman of a government entity, the United States Enrichment Corporation, until it was privatized in 1998.
Rainer's nonprofit activities have included serving as trustee, Southern Methodist University; executive board member, the Fletcher School, Tufts University; and member of the Board, Thomas J. Dodd Research Center. He joined the HDS Dean's Council in 2004 and served as its chairperson from 2005 until 2013. He and his wife, Carolyn, have three children and five grandchildren.
