Religion and the Art of Documentary Filmmaking
Alumni/ae Dinner and Alumni/ae Day 2007

Religion is a difficult subject to capture in media. Photographs of believers, printed texts of sermons, audio recordings of prayer, and other endeavors seem to frame only part of acts of spirituality and faith—and can only hint at the broader, more encompassing nature of religious life. Documentary filmmaking allows for a narrative of words and images that gives the viewer an in-depth glimpse inside the actions, ideas, and spirit of religious communities and individuals.

Alumni/ae Day 2007 will gather together distinguished alumni/ae for a conversation on the art of making documentary films about religion. Liz Walker, MDiv '05 and host of "Sundays With Liz" on Boston's WBZ-TV, will present the keynote address, "Finding Passion and Purpose: My Story." Her recent documentary films, A Glory From the God and In the Lion's Mouth, investigate the ongoing problems in Sudan, especially focusing on their relationship to religion. The Oscar-nominated documentary film Jesus Camp will be screened and discussed by a panel of faculty and alumni/ae, and alumni/ae filmmakers Valarie Kaur, MTS '07, Alex Kronemer, MTS '85, and Kurt Shaw, MTS '97, will host a conversation about capturing religion on film. Nokuthula Ngwenyama, MTS '02, will perform, and HDArts, the student arts group, will host a display of works by students and alumni/ae in Andover Chapel.
