This talk by Martin Sullivan, chief executive officer of Historic St. Mary's City Commission (St. Mary's City, Maryland), was presented by the CSWR's Religion and the Arts Initiative. Sullivan, who was a CSWR 40th Anniversary Fellow in 2003-04, investigates the evolution of the dialogue shaping the custodial role of museums in caring for holdings considered sacred, traces the dialogue's legal and ethical dimensions, and examines several key case studies.
