These instructions are based off of the Setup Wizard that comes with Apple Mail
(Mac OS X 10.3). Please note that other versions of the Setup Wizard
exist and may differ slightly. Double-click the Mail icon in the Dock
(or in Macintosh HD\Applications) to launch the Setup Wizard.

-
Enter your name.
-
Your internet email address comes next. This is your HDS email address. It is usually given in the form [first initial followed by last name]@hds.harvard.edu. However, to be certain of your exact address, please check the documentation given to you
in your Registration packet.
-
For the Incoming and Outgoing Mail Servers, enter mail.hds.harvard.edu.
-
On the first radio button, select IMAP. Using IMAP will allow you to store all of your messages on the server, so you can see your old and new email from any computer. (If you are a graduating student whose account will be deleted soon, you should select the POP3 protocol, which will download all of your email messages to your local computer.)
-
In the User Name field, enter your HDS user name, which is usually your first initial followed by your last name. Please note that, in this field you do not want to add "@hds.harvard.edu".
-
In the Password field, enter your HDS password, which you should have changed from the default one given to you at
registration. Click OK.
-
From the Mail menu, choose Preferences. With the
Account option selected, choose Edit to modify the settings for the email
account you just created.

-
In the drop-down window, click the Options button
below Outgoing Mail Server.

-
In the SMTP Server Options window, select Password
from the Authentication drop down list. Then enter your username and
password again. Click OK.

-
That's it! You're checking mail!
