Getting Additional Assistance

Check this document often, as policies and support
information are subject to change. Crucial changes will be noted in HDS IT
and Media Services announcements. This document supplements the information contained with the HDS User Rights and Responsibilities Policy.

To use the computer facility at Harvard Divinity School, you must
currently be enrolled in the School and have an active HDS email account (if you need to
have one set up for you, please report to the HDS Help Desk, located in the basement of
Andover Hall). Please note that accounts are personalized and under no
conditions can they be shared with other users. Students from other Harvard
schools and from the BTI are not permitted to use these machines without special
arrangements. Inquires should be sent to hdshelp@hds.harvard.edu.
The Student Computer Facility is located in the lower level of
Andover-Harvard Theological Library. The facility is equipped with
three printers—two Hewlett Packard LaserJet 4300DTN printers and a Hewlett Packard
Color LaserJet 4700DN printer. You may select each of these printers from any
workstations in the lab. See Printing Policy
below.
These lab machines are supported and maintained by the HDS Office of Information
Technology and Media Services. Library staff are not responsible for supporting these machines in any
way. Please do not ask library staff for assistance with these machines. The Office of Information Technology and Media Services staffs the lab with student consultants who are able to assist you with your essential academic
computing needs.
Do not store information on these machines for any significant amount of
time. All data stored on these
machines is routinely removed, and you risk losing any data you store on these
computers.
Logon and Security
In an effort to provide the HDS community with more stable and
available computing resources, we require users to log on to the
lab machines. Only HDS students may use this lab, and therefore only HDS students
will be supplied with logon IDs for these machines. It is a violation of the
HDS Computer Use Policy to share your logon information with anyone, and
failure to comply with this policy will result in the revocation of your lab privileges. Security authentication for the lab machines is provided by a Windows
Domain
Controller. Your lab account information is synchronized with
your email account information. This means that changing your email password
will also change your Domain password.
HDS IT and Media Services has configured these machines in such a way as to
prevent tampering. Attempting to modify or install software on these machines in any
way will not be tolerated and could result in the revocation of lab
privileges.
The technical specifications of the available workstations
are outlined below:
PCs: IBM Small Form Factor (18 workstations)
operating system: Microsoft Windows XP
Professional, Service Pack 2
monitor: IBM 17" LCD flat panel display
available drives:
1.44MB 3.5" disk drive (for use only with PC-formatted disks)
USB Flash drive (USB ports are easily
accessible to accommodate the flash memory drives.)
CD-RW/DVD+-RW drive
local hard disk (Users are only allowed to use certain folders to
store their data, among them the "Temporary Storage (Z:\)" folder. Please
note that this folder will often be purged weekly; therefore, users are
strongly encouraged to back up their data on personal disks.)
Available Software
The PCs in the lab are configured with the following software:
Mozilla Firefox
Internet Explorer
Microsoft Office 2003 Professional Suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint,
Publisher, and FrontPage
BibleWorks
Adobe Acrobat 7 Professional and Photoshop 7
RealOne, QuickTime, Flash
If you would like to request that additional software be installed on these
machines, please contact hdshelp@hds.harvard.edu.
Attempting to modify or install software on these machines
yourself is a violation of the HDS User Rights and Responsibilities Policy. Students may
not install any software whatsoever on these machines, including but not limited to:
special web browsers, software to view documents in other languages, and games.
-
Fifteen-Minute Rule
As a courtesy to other users, please do not leave your workstation unattended for more than
15 minutes. Any machine not attended to by
a user for more than 15 minutes is considered to be available to any users who
wish
to use it. Moreover, the Office of Information Technology and Media Services
staff and Andover-Harvard Library staff may log off any user who has not been present
for the mentioned period of time.
Please note that leaving your belongings on the desk, leaving tasks
running or disks in machines, etc., does not bypass this rule. Only the presence of a user
who is currently logged on is valid.
-
When there are lines
If there are no computers available, please be courteous to the users utilizing the
workstations and wait for your turn outside the lab.
-
Printing Policy
Printing is monitored by the HDS Office of Information
Technology and Media Services. During the 2007-08 academic year, black-and
white-printing will be charged at the rate of 7¢ per single-sided page. Color printing
will be 17¢ per page with a 25% discount for duplexing (two-sided printing).
You are responsible for all printing
which occurs under your login. This means that if you forget to log out, and
someone prints a document while logged in as you, YOU will be responsible for any charges
incurred. In other words, please remember to log out!
The cost for pages printed accidentally will not be refunded or restored to your print bill.
If you are experiencing difficulty printing, cease printing and
contact the lab consultant or call the HDS Office of Information Technology and
Media Services (6-9111) immediately. Refunds or
credits will only be given for printouts which are obviously flawed beyond user
control. To receive a credit, you must bring in your affected printouts to
the HDS
Office of Information Technology and Media Services. Please take care in printing: paper is a valuable resource that
should not be abused.
-
The use of any program playing sounds and/or music requires the use of
headphones, which are not provided.
-
Food and drinks are not permitted inside the Lab.
-
Lost and Found
All disks left in the computer lab during the day will be placed in
the lost and found area to the right of the Lab Support workstation; if the item in question
is of greater value, it will be taken to the HDS Helpdesk.
The library and the Office of Information Technology and Media Services Student
Computing Facility staff cannot be responsible for any
items lost or stolen in the lab at any time, so please take care not to leave your
belongings unattended.
-
The Student Computing Facility is a place of work; all users are urged to keep the noise level
down to the absolute minimum and to refrain from socializing in the lab.
-
Locked Workstations
Locking workstations in the Student Computing Facility
is not permitted, and
repeated violation of this policy may result in the revocation of lab use privileges.
Locking workstations is risky because Office of Information Technology and
Media Services staff and library staff will
"unlock" any locked workstations they see. Doing this will cause you to
lose
what you were working on before you locked the workstation.
-
Logging Off and Security
Take special care to properly logoff of the Student Computing Facility
workstation using the procedure below, rather than simply logging off of
HDS Webmail (which you should also be careful to do).
To logoff of a Lab Computer, follow these steps:
-
Using the mouse, click on the "Start" button at the bottom left-hand corner of
the screen.
-
After clicking on the "Start" button, you should see a list of options
including a menu labeled "Log Off <Username>".
- Click on the "Log Off" button.
Opening and Closing Hours; Staffing
The HDS Student Computing Facility will open and close in sync with the library's
hours. During regular academic term time, this is:
These times are subject to change, and do not reflect holiday
hours.
Lab consultants will be available throughout the week to answer
questions. They will occupy the computer marked "Lab
Support." Note that access to this computer is restricted. If there
is no Lab consultant on duty, please call the HDS Helpdesk at 617.496.9111 for
assistance.
Lab consultant duties do not include in-depth tutoring in the use of
software, though lab consultants are available to answer general questions.
Email Use in the Lab
Two options are available for email use in the lab. The most
convenient option is to use HDS Webmail, although it should not be used as
the exclusive method to access your email. More information about Webmail is available
here.
For assistance, first ask the lab
consultant on duty.
The following additional help is available:
-
Call the HDS help line at 617.496.9111 or
email hdshelp@hds.harvard.edu.
These are only staffed during the posted hours.
If you need assistance or if there is a computer or printer problem during
non-staffed lab support or help desk hours, you may ask for help at the library's
circulation desk. If time allows, they may be able to answer your question or contact
someone to help.
