Checking Your
Email from Home: Outlook Express
Outlook Express is a free email client that comes with the Windows
operating system. These instructions are based off of the Setup Wizard that comes with
Outlook Express 6. Please note that other versions of the Setup Wizard
exist and may differ slightly. While your current version of Outlook may
differ slightly, the necessary information is the same. Though older
versions of Outlook Express should work just fine, we recommend downloading
the latest version of Internet Explorer and Outlook Express from the following
location: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.htm.
In any case, once you have a version of Outlook Express installed, you
should have an Outlook Express icon on your desktop. Double-click on it
to launch the Setup Wizard.
-
If the window that pops up asks you about setting up your Internet
connection, go on to step 2. If it asks you about an email account,
skip to step 5.
-
Choose the "I want to set up my Internet connection manually"
option and click Next.
-
On the next screen, choose the option appropriate to you. If you connect to the internet through your phone line, choose the
first option. If your machine is
at work, or using a cable modem or DSL service (e.g., AT&T Broadband), choose the
second. Click Next, and then
click Next for the following screen as well.
-
The next screen asks you if you want to set up an
Internet Mail account. Choose
Yes, and click Next.
-
Choose "Create a new Internet mail account." Click Next.

-
The next window asks you for your name. This is not your
HDS user name, but your full, given name. Fill it in and click Next.

-
Your internet email address comes next. This is your HDS email
address. It is usually given in the form [first initial followed by
last name]@hds.harvard.edu. However, to be certain of your exact
address, please check the documentation given to you in your registration
packet. Choose "I already have an e-mail address" and type
your email address in the given window. Click Next.

-
On the first pulldown menu of the following window,
select IMAP. Using IMAP
will allow you to store all of
your messages on the server,
so you can see your old and
new email from any computer.
(If you are a graduating
student whose account will be
deleted soon, you should
select the POP3 protocol,
which will download all of
your email messages to your
local computer.) For the following
two fields (Incoming and
Outgoing mail servers), enter mail.hds.harvard.edu and then click Next.

-
The Account name field of the next window should be filled in for you
already, but check it to be sure. It should be your HDS user name,
which is usually your first initial followed by your last name.
Please note that, in this field you do not want to add "@hds.harvard.edu".
In the Password field, enter your HDS password, which you should have
changed from the default one given to you at registration. The
Remember password box can be checked or unchecked as you wish. Click
Next. Then, click Finish in the following screen.

-
You will now find yourself in the Outlook Express program itself.
You're not quite finished yet, however. Go to the Tools menu and
choose Accounts. This will bring up the Internet Accounts
window. Choose the Mail tab, and you should see something like the
image below. Double-click on the mail.hds account.

-
A Properties window will open up. In this window, you will want to
choose the servers tab. Most of the information can be left as it
is. The one change you need to make is to put a check mark in the
box next to My server requires authentication. This is very
important. If you do not perform this step, you will not be
able to send email. After checking that box, click OK and
then Close. Please Note: Some ISPs block outgoing mail
through the HDS SMTP server. If this is the case it will probably be
noted in the ISPs documentation. The solution is usually to enter
the ISPs mail server in the Outgoing mail field.

-
That's it! You're checking mail!
