Checking Your Email from Home: Outlook Express for Macintosh

Outlook Express is a free email client that comes with Microsoft Internet Explorer. It is also our recommended email client.

Please note: these instructions require Outlook Express version 5.0.6. If you do not have this version, you can download the latest from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/.

Once you have a version of Outlook Express installed, you should have an Outlook Express icon on your desktop. Open Outlook Express.

  1. Go to the Tools menu and choose the Accounts option.

If you do not see an Accounts option under the Tools menu, you do not have version 5.0.6 of Outlook Express. Download and install it, then go through this instruction again.

  2. A window will open up listing your email accounts. To create an account for your HDS email, click the New button.

  3. Another small window will open up. Select IMAP in the Account type drop-down list. Click OK.

  4. Choose the Account Settings tab. Enter a name for your Outlook Express Account. Under Personal Information, enter your name as you would like it to appear on messages. Then enter your full HDS email address. In the Receiving mail section, enter your username (without the "@hds.harvard.edu"), the name of the HDS email server, which is mail.hds.harvard.edu, and your  password. Finally, in the Sending mail section, enter mail.hds.harvard.edu as the name of the SMTP server. Then click the button that says "Click here for advanced sending options."

  5. At this point, another window will open up. Put a check mark in the box next to "SMTP server requires authentication." Leave all other options as they are. By selecting "Use same settings as incoming mail server," you will not need to enter your username and password again.

  6. Close the window.

  7. You will be returned to the previous window. Click OK.

  8. You will be returned the Accounts window. Close it.

  9. You should now be back to the regular Outlook Express window and should be ready to send mail.
