Wireless at HDS

In May 2001, Harvard Divinity School implemented a wireless network to allow access to Internet resources by students, faculty, and staff using laptop computers equipped with 802.11b Wireless Ethernet cards. Currently, the HDS wireless network consists of four access points located throughout the School:

  • Rockefeller Hall Refectory (under renovation until summer 2008)
  • Andover Library Circulation Area
  • Andover Library Reference
  • Divinity Hall Ground Floor

The HDS wireless network is compatible with all wireless cards that are 802.11b certified. Some wireless cards that have been tested and work with the HDS wireless network are:

  • Cisco Aironet Models 340 and 350 PC Cards
  • Intel® PRO/Wireless PC Cards
  • Linksys Instant Wireless PC Cards
  • 3Com Wireless LAN PC Cards
  • Apple Airport PC Cards

Laptop computers with manufacturer integrated/built-in 802.11b wireless devices will also work on the HDS wireless network. Some of these manufacturers are Dell, Compaq, IBM, and Apple.

(NOTE: HDS does not endorse specific manufacturers or their products. The above examples were used because of brand name familiarity. Any wireless device that is 802.11b certified should work with the HDS wireless network.)

Harvard Wireless Project

HDS is participating in the Office of The Harvard University CIO-sponsored Harvard Wireless Project. This project allows all Harvard students, staff, and faculty to use wireless facilities at all participating schools simply by authenticating with a Harvard University ID (HUID) and personal identification number (PIN). HUID holders can register and generate a PIN from the Harvard University PIN Administration site.

Information about wireless access elsewhere at Harvard is available on the Harvard University Wireless website.

How to Connect to Wireless on a PC
