Biographical Information:

Charles Rhind Joy (1885-1978) graduated from Harvard College in 1908 and in 1911 he received dual degrees from Harvard Divinity School and the Andover Theological Seminary. Ordained to the Unitarian ministry in 1913, he served parishes in Portland, Maine; Pittsfield, Lowell, Dedham, and Boston, Massachusetts; Cincinnati, Ohio; and St. Louis, Missouri. He served as the vice president of the American Unitarian Association from 1930 to 1937. During World War I he was the divisional secretary and regional director of YMCA in France, which began his long and distinguished career in foreign aid. From 1942 to 1946 he served as the director of the Unitarian Service Committee. He was also the European commissioner and associate executive director of the Save the Children Federation from 1947 to 1950, and was the chief of the Korean (Unitarian) Mission from 1950 to 1955. He also served as an international observer for the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (UNRRA), and as executive director of the Italian Medical Nutrition Mission. Joy worked extensively with the Cooperative for American Remittances to Europe (CARE). His publications include Harper's Topical Concordance and The Africa of Albert Schweitzer.

Collection includes sermons, 1909-1967; addresses, 1909-1966; printed articles, 1917-1966; undated manuscript writings; book manuscripts; material on Albert Schweitzer; correspondence, 1937-1968; worship materials; material relating to his work for the Unitarian Service Committee, 1940-1946, Save the Children Federation, 1947-1950, and CARE, 1951-1955; and biographical material. Boxes 52-54 include photographs related to his relief work.
