Biographical Information:

Hosea Ballou II (1796-1861) was born in Vermont and was the grandnephew of Hosea Ballou. A Universalist minister, he wrote The Ancient History of Universalism, and worked to elevate the standards of biblical criticism among Universalists. He served congregations in Stafford, Connecticut; Roxbury, Massachusetts; and Medford, Massachusetts. Ballou was an early proponent of formal theological education for ministers and, beginning in 1841, he worked diligently to establish a Universalist college. He is recognized as the founder of Tufts College, where he served as its first president from 1853 until 1861. For further information about the Ballou family, please see bMS 128, bMS 351, bMS 366.

Collection contains Ballou's sermons (those preached and his preliminary notes) as well as addresses and correspondence.

Note: The sermons of Hosea Ballou II are catalogued in two different ways. Most of them are arranged in the order of the Bible passage preached on in that sermon. Of this group almost all are undated, but Ballou kept a chronological record of the Bible passage he preached on for each Sunday, which he entered in record books bMS 359/1 (1) and (2). By using these record books, one can find the sermon he preached on a particular date. For example, to locate the sermon he preached on March 15, 1840, one can consult the first record book to determine the passage on which he preached on that date, and then use the following register to find this sermon. These record books also give the town in which he preached each Sunday. Ballou only kept this record through 1855, however, so there is a second group of sermons which are dated after 1855, and these are arranged chronologically, beginning with bMS 359/9 (5).
