Biographical Information:

John Simon Cantwell (1837-1907) was born in Dublin, Ireland. He was ordained as a Universalist minister at Malone, New York, in 1858. He served pastorates in Malone, New York; South Boston and North Attleboro, Massachusetts; Columbus, Ohio; and Chicago, Illinois. He received an honorary doctor of divinity degree from Lombard College in 1876. Cantwell was appointed editor of The New Covenant in 1883, and then Western editor of The Universalist Leader upon their merger in 1897.

Scope and Content:

The collection consists of Cantwell's correspondence as well as correspondence between third parties. Cantwell was an avid autograph collector and much of the correspondence relates to this hobby. Correspondence does not exist for every name present in the container list; in some cases just the autograph of the person is included (i.e., the collection includes Louisa May Alcott's autograph and Susan B. Anthony's autograph, but there is no correspondence to or from either of these women).
