Barth had a short academic career, teaching at the University of Puerto Rico. He served as pastor for three congregations in Massachusetts and Florida. He was also a trustee of the Meadville Theological School, chairman of the Interracial Committee of the Boston Council of Churches, and a member of the Board of Directors of the Boston Center for Adult Education.
