Image of the Month for April 2004

First Universalist, Bangor, Me.

The First Universalist Society of Bangor, Me., began in 1833. This church building was dedicated on Dec. 15, 1862. It was largely destroyed in the great Bangor fire of April 30, 1911, with only the outside walls remaining. Before reconstruction had begun, a wind storm brought down the side walls and damaged the rear wall. Plans were then re-drawn using only the front wall. The reconstructed building is now the building used by the Unitarian Universalist Society of Bangor, the product of the 1995 consolidation of the First Universalist Society and the Independent Congregational Society.
