October Is Theological Libraries Month

Andover-Harvard Theological Library joins other libraries in the United States and Canada in October to celebrate Theological Libraries Month.

This celebration will include public events on four Thursdays in October. Concurrent with these events, the library staff will serve tea and cookies from 3 to 5 pm on October 8 and 15 in the Rabinowitz Room on the third floor and from 3 to 5 pm on October 22 and 29 on the first floor.

Thursday, October 8, 3-5 pm, Rabinowitz Room, third floor: Holocaust Rescue and Relief: A Digital Project.

Throughout and after World War II, the Unitarian and Universalist Service Committees aided hundreds of displaced persons in Europe. With the help of grant money, the library has undertaken a massive project to digitize and make available to researchers worldwide roughly 257 boxes of archival material that documents these efforts. Come learn about this large-scale project, see digital images, and view original documents.

Thursday, October 15, 3-5 pm, Rabinowitz Room, third floor: Movies and Media at the Library

The library has a growing collection of movies on religious topics. We also have films on secular subjects with underlying theological themes. View an entertaining montage of film clips, while enjoying tea and cookies, and perhaps discover a video to bring home for the weekend!

Thursday, October 22, 3-10 pm, and Friday, October 23, 8:30 am-6 pm, first floor: Book Sale

Sip tea, enjoy a cookie, and browse the books! The library will be selling, for very modest prices, mostly duplicate copies of gift books.

Thursday, October 29, 4-4:30 pm, Stendahl Lobby, second floor: How to Practice Compassion: A Gallery Talk

Take a half hour to interact with images, objects, and texts that express compassion and healing through the centuries. Ponder the series of prints that inspired this year's exhibit and get an overview of the items displayed. Cliff Wunderlich, chair of the library's exhibit committee, will be your guide.

Theological Libraries Month is sponsored by the American Theological Library Association (ATLA). Established in 1946, ATLA is a professional association of more than 1,000 individual, institutional, and affiliate members providing programs, products, and services in support of theological and religious studies libraries and librarians. ATLA's ecumenical membership represents many religious traditions and denominations. ATLA also provides access to the scholarly literature of religion and preserves it for future generations. For more information, see the ATLA website.
