TECHNOLOGY
Like
the rest of the world, libraries over the past two decades have
changed the way they do their work. Whether cataloging a book
or finding obscure references for the scholar, without computers
the modern library is severely restricted. During the Library
renovation, the Librarians worked closely with the staff of the
Office of Information Technology and Media Services (IT&MS) to
upgrade all aspects of technology in the library.
Technological
change, more than any other aspect of the renovated library, responds
to current demands and anticipates future needs. Including staff
and public-access PC's and e-mail kiosks, there are more than
80 computers in the new library. Most student study spaces are
wired for data connections. Several areas of the new building
have been equipped with hubs for wireless access to the Internet.
Library users whose laptop computers are equipped with wireless
network cards can access the Internet-including HOLLIS-without
being plugged into data outlets or using library catalog and e-mail
kiosks. Wireless access also extends into the plaza area outside
of the Library.
The
Technical Instruction Classroom on the
top floor of the new building is another example of the collaboration
of the Library and IT&MS. This fully equipped electronic classroom
contains twelve computer workstations and a "smart" lectern from
which the instructor can guide students and others through the
intricacies of the use of online materials and programs. A video
projector is mounted in the ceiling; a DVD/CD player, an overhead
projector, slide projector, and other AV equipment are also standard
equipment here. This facility adds a new capacity to the instructional
functions of the library and other units of the School.
Over time, we expect the uses
of this room to expand. Currently, library staff offers training
on the uses of HOLLIS, including its public catalog and hundreds
of databases and information resources. Special courses designed
to support the curriculum focus on Internet-based resources. Library
staff also receives HOLLIS training here.
IT&MS offers training on standard
office software, such as Microsoft Word and Excel and other software
applications used at the Divinity School. In addition, training
is offered by IT&MS for Faculty, Faculty Assistants and Teaching
Fellows on the iCommons toolkit used for course web sites.
The Lower Level of the library houses the
Student Computer Facility. Its sixteen
networked PC's and printers are available for HDS student use.
During most hours when the library is open, an IT student assistant
is nearby to assist with problems and questions.
