The Problematics of Buddhism, Society, and the State in Thailand

A panel composed of CSWR director Donald K. Swearer, Thongchai Winichakul of the University of Wisconsin, and Thai Buddhist activist Sulak Sivaraksa, celebrating the birth centenary of Thailand's most influential monk of the twentieth century, Buddhadasa Bhikkhu, the major influence on progressive, reformist Buddhism in that country, both lay and monastic. This panel situated Buddhadasa within contesting views of Thai Buddhism in the broader context of Thai society and politics.
