The Boston Living Center (BLC) is a non-profit community and resource center which serves over 2,000 HIV+ people annually. Since 1989, BLC has provided innovative programs in nutrition, education, wellness and support services. BLC programs and services are available at no cost to members. Delicious, hot meals are served daily in the community dining room. It is in this milieu that the Pastoral Care intern has the opportunity to engage members, cultivate relationships and begin to establish a spiritual presence. The Pastoral Care intern provides a listening ear, no appointments necessary (unless arranged with the member), no judgment, accepting members where they are (or are not). Helping members to find their voices about health, poverty, illness, mental health, housing, relationships with others and disclosure of HIV status is part of the spiritual journey. Further along the journey are issues and emotions related to faith, trust, despair, anger, hope and acceptance.
Student
Involvement: Students will serve as pastoral companions for those who come to the BLC. Students provide appropriate presence, and support for those who wish to talk about spirituality or the basic challenges of life while living with HIV/AIDS. The Clergy Council of BLC is made up of clergy from differing religious denominations who offer faith healing services, educational seminars and other faith based activities as well as general pastoral care. Pastoral care interns will have the opportunity to interact with members of the clergy council to support projects and activities. Pastoral care interns may anticipate serving HIV+ members 1:1, in small group and in milieu as well as assisting with program development and implementation.
