Project: The mission of MATCH-UP Interfaith Volunteers is to reduce social isolation, enhance the quality of life, and preserve the dignity of older and disabled adults in greater Boston. To do this, we recruit and train volunteers of all faiths who provide friendship, advocacy, education, assistance, and emotional support through three program areas: we make long-term friendship matches to provide companionship and support, offer short-term assistance to and from medical appointments and with other tasks, such as help grocery shopping, and education on issues of aging. MATCH-UP was a founding member of the National Federation of Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers now known as the Faith in Action National Network. Since its inception, MATCH-UP has served over 17,000 Boston-area elders and disabled adults.

Student Involvement: Students help recruit volunteers, conduct site visits of elders' homes, match elders and adults with disabilities with volunteers, plan programs, and conduct some congregational outreach. Duties include staff assistance, "match" supervision, strengthening congregational coalitions though community outreach and direct services with isolated elders. Students may also choose to work in community development, marketing, and public relations.

Arts of Ministry Competencies: Pastoral Care and Counseling. Administration and Program Development. Public Leadership, Community Organizing and Planning.

Supervision: Students receive individual supervision to explore theological and vocational issues raised by their work with the agency.
