Project:
The Smith College Chapel is an interfaith setting for ministry in higher education. The services of the Chapel are open to both the college and Northampton communities. The Ecumenical Christian Church at Smith College is a part of the Protestant community. It is in this ministry that the intern will be primarily affiliated. The focus of the Chapel's ministry is the entire Smith College community: students, faculty, administrators and staff.
Student
Involvement: The intern will assist in the planning and the conduct of Sunday worship, as well as developing programs for religious study and counseling with the women at Smith College. The intern's responsibilities will include a variety of pastoral, programmatic and administrative duties usually associated with the chaplaincy in a liberal arts college.
Arts of Ministry Competencies:
Preaching and Worship.
Pastoral Care and Counseling.
Administration and Program Development.
Supervision: The Chaplain to the College will supervise the intern in weekly meetings. The meetings will be designed to reflect on the intern's experience, in order to learn more about: the conduct of liturgy (including preaching); the art of cultivating lay leadership; the balance of witness to one's own tradition with appreciative understanding of other traditions; the modes of pastoral care appropriate to an exceedingly diverse constituency; the function of community service and social justice as an expression of religious values; and the ministerial challenge of religious and intellectual integrity in a largely secular academic environment. The intern will be expected to spend Sundays and Mondays in Northampton, with transportation and housing provided.
Responsibilities will begin with the 10:30 a.m. Sunday worship service and will include meetings with student leaders and/or study and afternoon or evening program planning groups.
