Tufts was founded in 1852 by the Universalist Church of America as a non-sectarian college. It now has about 5,000 undergraduates and 3,000 graduate students on 3 campuses in Medford, Boston and Grafton. Goddard Chapel was built in 1882 and has served as a center for all faiths on the campus. There are also full-time Catholic, Jewish, Protestant, and Muslim Chaplains, supported by their faith communities, who hold the appointment of Chaplain to the University. Together, the Chaplains have sought to develop an effective United Campus Ministry, which includes noon-time midweek university-wide interfaith services, joint conferences, dormitory talks, co-sponsorship of speakers, etc.
