Project: Support to Shelter Volunteers and Community Awareness Builder for the Harvard Square Homeless Shelter. Established in 1983, this is the only exclusively student-run homeless shelter in the United States. Each night from November 15 through April 15, 24 guests are welcomed in the dormitory for a safe place to sleep, eat, and interact with others. Outside the operational months of the shelter, student shelter directors from PBHA also train volunteers and organize for the upcoming shelter "season."

Student Involvement: The student will work with student shelter directors and volunteers in the shelter to help them "process" their experiences, including assisting them to reflect on how their experiences in the classroom influence what they are doing among the homeless and how working with the homeless changes the questions they may be asking in their classes (or even the directions they are heading vocationally). It is necessary that the student have a facility to do this work with volunteers meeting them where they are rather than imposing a philosophical or religious perspective on the volunteers. Additionally, the student will interact with members of the congregation, principally through the Shelter Advisory Committee and in programs designed to invite other groups in to see the shelter or help with its program and/or funding. It is essential that the student have or develop a capacity to speak clearly about the purposes of the shelter and needs for community organizing around homelessness issues.

Arts of Ministry Competencies: Pastoral Care and Counseling. Administration and Program Development.

Supervision: Monthly group supervision and additional individual supervision to be determined with supervisor.

Number of Students: 1

Total Stipend: $4,000.00

Type of Stipend: work study (sc 1000)
