Project: First Parish in Milton is a growing congregation of over 200 adult members and over 100 children and youth. It is a historic congregation that currently is home to a lot of young families. Milton is a suburb adjacent to Boston, bordering the neighborhoods of Dorchester, Mattapan and Hyde Park. Historically Irish Catholic, working class in the north and east and very wealthy in the west and south, the population has been steadily shifting over the past 10 years. 2000 census figures show the population to be 84% white, 10% black, 2% Asian, 2% Hispanic, and those numbers have likely shifted quite a bit since that time. The congregation is predominantly white, with about 10% identifying as people of color.

We, the members of the First Parish in Milton, Unitarian Universalist, are committed to: Building a self-governing, mutually supportive religious community of friendly and caring people;

Providing a haven for spiritual inquiry and growth;

Contributing to a universal vision of peace and justice through action;

Celebrating the diversity and inherent worth of all people; thereby

Enriching our lives and those of our children.

First Parish is in a considerable time of discernment of its mission internally and in the larger community. We are the stewards of several charitable funds for low-income residents of the town of Milton, and have a part-time social worker who is the main source of referrals and assistance to those in need in the town of Milton. The historic commitment of the congregation to charity-based social action projects is being re-examined and we are seeking more holistic ways of being part of efforts toward social justice in our community and our world.

Student Involvement: A field education student will have the opportunity to participate in planning and leading worship, (including preaching), learn about and participate in religious education, take on administrative tasks, attend staff and Parish Committee (board) meetings, and develop and carry through projects that match both congregational need and student interest in consultation with supervisor. We expect a student with a high level of maturity, an ability to hold sensitive information with care, take responsibility for his/her own development, and be willing to bring her/his unique skills and gifts to the larger ministry of the congregation.

Arts of Ministry Competencies:

Supervision: The student will meet with the supervisor once a week, and, if in an internship, with an internship committee once a month

Number of Students: 1

Total Stipend: $4,000.00

Type of Stipend: direct pay from site (sc 4000)

Notes: The student will be reimbursed for mileage from the church to pastoral care or other obligations. Site is unavailable 2008/9 - 2009/10.
