HDS - OMS - Field Education Handbook

Project: This urban church is located in and reflects one of Bostons proudly diverse neighborhoods. Our small but growing congregation (30 active members plus assorted seekers, with approximately 25 in worship on Sunday) thrives on good worship and connection to the surrounding community through holiday food and gift programs, an annual Martin Luther King Day service, and individual members participation in educational, food service and other programs at local agencies. The congregation loves the arts, and the church has been a neighborhood site for concerts, performances and exhibits, such as the annual Jamaica Plain Open Studios. This year, we are launching a two-day per week (Monday and Wednesday), two hours per session, after school program for up to eight middle school students, to be staffed by one lay volunteer, the field education student and guest artists. The Hispanic Community Church is also located in our building. We are an Open and Affirming congregation.

Student Involvement: The student's involvement may be shaped to meet the students needs within the mission of the church and the weekday program described above. Participation in Sunday worship is required. Other opportunities include adult education, pastoral care and visitation and program development related to growth. The student would be welcome at regular meetings of the Church Council and committees, but not expected to attend unless appropriate to learning goals or a specific project.
