565 Boylston St. Contact Person: Jason Lydon Project: The Community Church of Boston is a politically engaged, theologically diverse congregation, a cutting-edge congregational experiment founded at the end of World War I seeking to unleash the human spirit for justice and peace. We are the downtown UU congregation which claims a universalist heritage. Our humanism equally values religion and skepticism, and our congregation "prays with its feet" at demonstrations, on picket lines, and in the long march toward justice. We see value, as well, in the arts as a means of personal and collective growth, and maintain a resident art gallery, the Gallery for Social/Political Art, and host a number of small theaters in Lothrop Auditorium. Our expansive vision is balanced by an intimate congregational setting in our community center, a store-front above a tavern in Copley Square. Sunday service attracts a weekly congregation of 55 to 75 persons, with gatherings of 125-175 two or three times a year when more well-known personalities speak. Student Involvement: "Community" provides an opportunity for a field education student to craft a social action ministry in the urban setting. The larger half of the student's time will be focused on a ministry of particular interest to the student (for example, working with Greater Boston Interfaith Organization, working with politically active students at UMass/Boston and Roxbury Community College, organizing CCB participation in the UU Urban Ministry, organizing a UUs for the Normalization of US-Cuba Relations tour, etc.). The lesser half of the student's time will be spent on a variety of short-term modules, including leading at least one adult education praxis-model study group, preaching once each semester and designing and implementing a non-traditional Sunday morning experience, and other projects as negotiated with the supervising minister. Public Leadership, Community Organizing and Planning. Supervision: The student will meet weekly for supervision. The student will attend a monthly staff meeting for one and a half hours per month.
