Project: Promise The Children is a network of advocates for children's issues. We believe that the future of our society depends on the well being of our children today, far too many of whom are living in poverty. We work for systemic change through legislative advocacy and provide direct service to children and families in need by identifying and publicizing quality volunteer opportunities, especially for members of Unitarian Universalist congregations.

Student Involvement: The student will work directly with the board in developing the organization and its programs. Specific activities may be selected from the following:

Learning about public policy issues affecting the lives of children and youth and writing action alerts and articles about these issues for the website and newsletters

Making presentations (including worship) for congregations and youth groups

Working with the Legislative Training and Action Program for Youth

Assisting with the development and promotion of public programs on policy issues

Helping identify and publicize volunteer opportunities

Developing materials for congregational use (for adults or children or both)

Arts of Ministry Competencies: Preaching and Worship. Religious Education and Spiritual Development. Administration and Program Development. Public Leadership, Community Organizing and Planning.

Supervision: Because Promise does not have an office, the student will meet regularly with the board president, Rebekah Richardson, at a location convenient to both, to develop work plans and to evaluate progress. In addition, the student will meet weekly with the consultant, the Rev. Dorothy Emerson, for theological reflection. A personal journal will be encouraged.

Number of Students: 1
