Project: The Lemuel Shattuck Hospital is a Department of Public Health Hospital that has always responded to the Health challenges facing our community for over fifty years. The hospital has 125 psychiatric and 143 medical inpatient beds and has a large outpatient clinic. The hospital is also a teaching hospital affiliated with Tufts School of Medicine.

Lemuel Shattuck Hospital (LSH) services are directed to the medical and psychiatric needs of the most vulnerable people of Massachusetts. Some of our patients are homeless and dealing with physical and/or mental health problems. Some of our patients come with drug and alcohol additions which add other dimensions to the work of staff and the students.

Student Involvement: The student will assist the hospital chaplain in providing pastoral care (including spiritual/religious assessments) to the individual patients, small groups, staff, patient family members, volunteers; lead interfaith worship; small group discussions on spirituality or Bible study groups; participate in the (Dept. Mental Health) Human Rights Committee. Student will also help provide pastoral care to the Department of Corrections patients.

The goal of the placement would be to provide the student with a working understanding the role of health and spirituality. The student would be required to take part in in a volunteer training program, PPD test and CORI check.

Arts of Ministry Competencies: Preaching and Worship. Pastoral Care and Counseling. Administration and Program Development.

Supervision: Supervision of the student provided by the Director of Pastoral Care and Patient Advocacy Services who is an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ and a Licensed Certified Social Worker. The student will meet weekly with Chaplain/Patient Advocate for supervision and theological reflection. The Excutive Vice President of Patient Care provides administrative oversite of the hospital's Pastoral Care Department
