311 Broadway Contact Person: Rev. Tim Stein Project: Faith Lutheran Church is a vital, growing urban church in one of the most diverse and rapidly changing neighborhoods in Cambridge. The church, too, is diverse in ethnic background, income, education, race, and age. The majority of new members and friends are in their twenties and thirties. Most of the children in the church are under six years old. An Eritrean prayer and worship group and Calvary Praise and Worship Center are important parts of the community of Faith. The church runs Faith Kitchen, a community meals program for hungry people in which about fifty people gather to cook and eat together twice a month. The program is co-managed by members of Faith, Calvary, and the nearby synagogue. Members of the local mosque also participate. Faith is an active member of the Boston Cambridge Mission Initiative (a coalition of Lutheran urban congregations) and the Boston Metro Conference of New England Lutheran churches. Student Involvement: Because Faith is changing and growing, the opportunities for student work are wide-ranging. A portion of the work will be dedicated to managing Faith Kitchen, Faith's food program. The remainder will depend on the student's goals and hopes. Possibilities: Assist with the worship and worship planning (especially developing new ways to worship); preaching; planning and launching new ministries in the community; working with other local congregations; teaching adults and children.
