Project: The Technology and Culture Forum at MIT (TAC) promotes discussion of and response to the ethical implications of scientific and technological innovation. We offer many public events each year on issues like sustainable development, bioethics, weapons development, and economic justice. TAC is a ministry of the Episcopal Ministry at MIT, grounded in the belief that all people are called to use their abilities to work toward peace, justice and reconciliation.

Student Involvement: The student will work on the planning team of at least one event or action per semester, including a project focused on an aspect of domestic poverty. The student will attend worship, dinner, and discussion each Wednesday night with the Lutheran Episcopal Ministry at MIT (LEM), periodically preaching and teaching on ethical concerns. The student will help MIT students articulate their ethical concerns and connect them to their spirituality. Other tasks or projects may be developed, in consultation with the supervisor.

Arts of Ministry Competencies: Pastoral Care and Counseling. Religious Education and Spiritual Development. Administration and Program Development. Public Leadership, Community Organizing and Planning.

Supervision: Weekly one-hour theological reflection session with the Coordinator. Weekly one-hour staff planning and prayer meeting (Wednesday at 4 pm).

Number of Students: 1

Total Stipend: $4,000.00

Type of Stipend: work study (sc 1000)

Travel to MIT is best done by bus (#1 bus from Harvard Square) or T (to Central Square), or by bike. TAC and LEM operate out of the MIT Religious Activities Center, which is on the corner of Mass. Ave. and Amherst St., next to the MIT Chapel. Must be both comfortable with sacramental Christian worship and comfortable working in a culturally and theologically diverse environment. No scientific or technological expertise required, but must be interested in learning about issues in these fields.
