Project: City on a Hill Charter Public School (COAH) is a four-year secondary school that was started under it’s own charter in 1995. The student body is comprised of 85% Black, 8% Hispanic, 4% White, 2% Asian, and 1% Native American. It is 42% male and 58% female and admits about 260 students through a lottery program. Students come from a variety of Greater Boston communities with the largest numbers coming from Dorchester and Roxbury. The Charter at COAH emphasizes college preparation and citizenship. Students do a week’s internship in the community each of the four years they are at COAH. During their senior year, they are required to do City Project, which challenges them to explore future job possibilities in the form of a research project and some volunteer work.

Student Involvement: A field education student at COAH will meet with several students on an individual basis to provide counseling, support, and advocacy. Working with adolescents often requires contact with family/guardians and other caregivers that can contribute vital information to assist in the students having a successful academic experience. The student has the opportunity to observe in the classroom and work closely with the faculty. In addition to the individual and family components, the student will co-lead a psychoeducational/support group for a designated time period during the year.

Arts of Ministry Competencies: Pastoral Care and Counseling. Administration and Program Development.

Supervision: Weekly with supervisor.
