Project: CASPAR is a non-profit organization founded in 1970 in response to the need for community-based services for those affected by substance use disorders. Since then CASPAR has buit a comprehensive array of outreach, shelter, stabilization, residential, aftercare, education, and prevention services to meet the needs of diverse populations through programs that are safe, accessible, and supportive. CASPAR's mission is to support people wherever they may be on the substance use/abuse/recovery continuum to improve the quality of their lives

Student Involvement: CASPAR will provide the Field Education Student with an opportunity to explore the complex issues surrounding alcohol abuse and addiction, its effect on the individual, the family, and the community. The role of the student will be to engage faith communities in Cambridge and Somerville in CASPAR's work. This can be accomplished in many ways and a few include: recruiting volunteers from faith groups, encouraging education projects within faith groups that raise awareness about CASPAR and its services.

The student will receive an in-depth orientation to the CASPAR and its services and will have the opportunity to work directly with clients and staff in our programs and/or shelter. This will prepare the student to reach out to area faith groups and speak intelligently about alcoholism, drug abuse, and CASPAR. The student may also utilize the local media to raise awareness and should have stong writing and public speaking skills. This is a challenging but exciting placement because the student can use a great deal of creativity to accomplish the goals of the placement.

Arts of Ministry Competencies: Pastoral Care and Counseling. Administration and Program Development.

Supervision: Weekly supervision will assist the student in meeting weekly learning objectives and a reflecting on the experience.
