Project: The Unitarian Universalist Urban Ministry is a social justice ministry dedicated to the pursuit of justice in our urban communities and the recognition that we are all part of one human family, urban and suburban. As a 180 year old ministry-at-large rooted in the transformative experience of direct engagement with those struggling for fair and decent lives, we sponsor a full array of justice-nurturing opportunities in furtherance of systemic change, including service, education, worship, witness, advocacy and action. One of the oldest faith-based social justice organizations in the country, the UU Urban Ministry is supported by an alliance of over 45 Unitarian Universalist congregations in greater Boston. With an extensive volunteer program, our outreach activities seek to bridge the divides of race, class and ethnicity among our church communities and inner city families. Our current programs and activities include Roxbury Youth Programs, a continuum of after-school, weekend and summer academic and enrichment programs, including Stand High/Stand United; Renewal House, one of the oldest domestic violence shelters in Boston; Ricesticks and Tea, an Asian food pantry distributing ethnically appropriate food and nutritional counseling; United Souls, a re-entry and support program for men in transition; the Action for Justice Project, a volunteer-led project marshalling congregational involvement in urban social justice work; and the resources of the Education and Justice Center and First Church in Roxbury.
