Project: SpeakOut is a not-for-profit, educational organization that provides professionally trained volunteer speakers in order to bring about greater understanding and acceptance of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people. Typical bureau engagements include speaking for college and universities, high schools, religious groups, workplaces and other community organizations.

Student Involvement: The internship is designed so that it can be tailored to a variety of interests and skills. The student will choose at least two of the following: 1) Religious Education Coordinator. The intern will co-lead two continuing education meetings for SpeakOut members on the topic of speaking at religious engagements and fielding questions about religion in non-religious engagements. The intern will also plan at least one community forum open to the public on an issue of the interns choosing related to sexual orientation and religion. 2) Religious Outreach Coordinator. The intern will work on arranging speaking engagements in religious settings and coordinate a volunteer religious outreach committee. 3) Grant Researcher. The intern will work with the Program Coordinator to research funding sources and write grant proposals. This will involve working with the Board of Directors on long-term planning and with the staff on designing special projects.

Arts of Ministry Competencies: Administration and Program Development. Public Leadership, Community Organizing and Planning.

Supervision: The student will have weekly in-person supervision with the Administrative Director and, if s/he chooses option 3, will have specific outreach training and supervision from the Outreach Coordinator.
