Rockefeller Hall, which originally opened in 1970 as a student residence and "community center," was designed by Edward Larrabee Barnes (1915-2004), a native of Chicago and a graduate of the Harvard Graduate School of Design. According to the American Institute of Architects (AIA), "Barnes is remembered for fusing modernism with vernacular architecture and understated design." On December 7, 2006, the AIA awarded, posthumously, the 2007 Gold Medal to Edward Larrabee Barnes. The Gold Medal, awarded annually, is the highest honor the AIA confers on an architect, recognizing an individual whose significant body of work has had a lasting influence on the theory and practice of architecture.
The October 1973 issue of Architectural Record included a brief article describing Rockefeller Hall.
