Harvard-Owned Housing
Harvard Real Estate Services (HRES) owns and manages almost 3,000 apartments
within about a one-mile radius of Harvard Square. These apartments range from one-room studios to two-, three-, and
four-bedroom apartments. Visit the Harvard Real Estate Services website, particularly the
Harvard
University Housing page,
for complete information on rents, eligibility, apartment complexes, and maps.
An application is
created online.
Leases are typically for
one year and end on June 30. Rental opportunities are offered by lottery. To
have a place in the first round of the lottery, students should apply by
April 26, 2009.
Two HRES housing complexes, 10 Akron Street and 5 Cowperthwaite Street, are
part of the Graduate
Commons Program. These residences provide programming designed
to
foster social and intellectual community among residents.
Cronkhite Graduate
Center is a dormitory for Harvard graduate students. It is managed by
the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study and has a mandatory meal plan.
Application for a place in this residence is separate from the HRES process, and
Cronkhite applications are due by April 30 (with a $75 application
fee). Contracts for this residence are for 9 months (8/20/09-5/28/10).
Advantages of choosing Harvard-owned housing: The process of securing
a place to live can be completed from any place that has Internet access.
Students can be confident that the accommodations will be of acceptable quality without
making a visit to Cambridge ahead of time. Tenants in Harvard-owned housing do not have to provide a security deposit, final
month's rent, or brokers' fees. Rents are conveniently charged to the student's term bill.
